Grahame Patrick ist wohl der beste Elvis-Imitator der Welt. Er wurde in Irland geboren kam früh mit der Musik von Elvis in Kontakt, zog dann mit seinen Eltern nach Kanada, wo er seit Anfang der 90er Jahre als Elvis Double auftrat.Später hatte er mehrere Jahre lang eine Show in Las Vegas. Eines der Highlights seiner Karriere war ein Auftritt als Opening Act für Soul-Legende Dionne Warwick. Im Estrel Festival Center Berlin tritt er seit 2003 regelmäßig bei „Stars in concert“ auf und nun tourt er auch dieses Jahr wieder mit „Elvis-Das Musical“ durch Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, die Niederlande und Belgien.
Nastassja Juel Stork: Wie unterscheidet sich das deutsche Publikum zu dem Publikum in den USA?
Grahame Patrick: In Deutschland ist das Publikum ein bisschen zurückhaltender, in den USA schreien und kreischen die Leute viel mehr an manch unangebrachten Stellen (lacht a. d. R.) und die Leuten sind in den USA mehr an der Show beteiligt, wo das deutsche Publikum lehnt sich zurück und schaut sie die Show an – ich mag beide Arten des Publikums. Es ist einfach sehr interessant, hier in Deutschland wird das Publikum am Ende der Show verrückt – ich liebe das. Ich liebe es, wie sich das deutsche Publikum die Show ansehen kann und dann am Ender der Show richtig mitgeht, das ist wundervoll!
Nastassja Juel Stork: Hast Du ein Lieder/Lieder, die Du besonders gerne singst?
Grahame Patrick: Ich habe sehr, sehr viele Lieblingslieder von Elvis. Ein Lieblingslied ist „I am leaving“, aber ich könnte noch viel mehr Lieblingslieder aufzählen!
Nastassja Juel Stork: Gibt es für Dich in der Show einen Höhepunkt?
Grahame Patrick: Die ganze Show ist ein Highlight für mich, ich genieße alles an der Show! Aber ganz besonders ist es für mich, mit dem Stamps Quartet zu singen! Mit Ed Enoch zu singen ist wahrscheinlich DAS Highlight für mich.
Nastassja Juel Stork: Hast Du noch nach so vielen Auftritten in den 20 Jahren noch Lampenfieber und hast Du Rituale vor der Show?
Grahame Patrick: Ich bin immer vor jeder Show etwas nervös, jedes Publikum ist anders, es sind immer andere Leute dort. Du möchtest und hoffst, dass sie mögen, was Du auf der Bühne tust, deswegen bist Du immer nervös. Wenn Du so hart arbeitest, willst Du sicher gehen, dass Deine Stimme gut ist und Du körperlich auf voller Höhe bist. Du hast Angst, dass etwas schief geht, da musst einfach Du cool bleiben und Dich konzentrieren, Spaß haben und hart arbeiten. Wegen dieser kleinen Ängste bist Du immer nervös.
Wir kommen vor der Show alle zusammen und strecken unsere Fäuste in die Mitte, wir nennen das „Die Power Rangers“ – es steht für Solidarität im Team und soll uns gegenseitig Energie geben und Glück bringen bevor es auf die Bühne geht.
Nastassja Juel Stork: Wie ist es, fast jeden Tag in einer anderen Stadt aufzutreten? Hast Du Zeit, Dir etwas von den Städten anzuschauen?
Grahame Patrick: Jeder Tag ist anders, ich mag es von Stadt zu Stadt zu reisen, das ist schon spannend, verschiedene Städte und Veranstaltungsorte zu sehen und dort zu spielen, es ist sehr spannend zu schauen, was dort passieren wird. Ich habe nicht jedes Mal Zeit, mir die Stadt anzuschauen, wir kommen normalerweise in die Stadt, es geht sofort ins Hotel oder zum Theater und dort starten wir sofort mit den Vorbereitungen für die Show und nach der Show geht’s sofort wieder zurück zum Hotel. Wenn wir aber einen Tag frei haben, oder den nächsten Tag keine Show haben, oder sehr früh in der Stadt ankommen können wir schon noch etwas rumschauen.
Nastassja Juel Stork: Das Publikum Deiner Show ist oftmals eine ältere Generation – würdest Du Dir auch wünschen, dass mehr jüngere Leute zu Deinen Shows kommen, damit Elvis‘ Musik auch in die nächsten Generationen getragen wird?
Grahame Patrick: Natürlich, ich würde es lieben, wenn jüngere Leute Elvis entdecken und ihn so entdecken, wie ich ihn entdeckte. Ich hörte ihn zufällig im Radio als ich sehr, sehr jung war und er interessierte mich gleich, der Sound, seine Stimme. Viele Familien bringen ihre Kinder mit zur Show und ich sehe in ihren Augen, dass sie es genießen und etwas fasziniert sind. Es ist schön, wenn jüngere Leute dies auch entdecken. Wir sollten nicht vergessen, Elvis wäre nun 81 Jahre alt, es ist eine ältere Generation, aber er lockt noch immer alle Leute in die Shows.
Nastassja Juel Stork: Es gibt 31 Filme, in denen Elvis mitspielte – hast Du sie alle gesehen und gibt es welche, die Du besonders gut/schlecht findest und wenn ja, warum?
Grahame Patrick: Ja, ich habe natürlich alle Filme gesehen, es macht Spaß sie zu sehen. Ich glaub, King Creole ist mein Lieblingsfilm, der Soundtrack ist unglaublich und ich denke, es ist mit die beste Schauspielerische Leistung von Elvis, das Buch war gut, es ist einfach ein guter Film.

Nastassja Juel Stork: Was hörst Du privat für Musik?
Grahame Patrick: Ich höre alles, ich bin ein größer Fan von Roy Orbison, da bekomme ich zur Zeit nicht genug von, ich liebe Bobby Darin (Mack the knife), ich liebe Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, ich liebe Soul-Musik, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, ich höre alles… Ich liebe die Bee Gees, natürlich die Beatles, Coldplay, die etwas morderner sind, U2, The Crooners, Neil Diamond. – Das sind ein paar meiner Favoriten!
Nastassja Juel Stork: Hast Du schon einmal Graceland besucht? Wenn ja, wie war es und wenn nein, hast Du es noch vor?
Grahame Patrick: Ich habe Graceland besucht, es war mit das Erste, was ich gemacht habe, als ich mit 16 Jahren nach Kanada gezogen bin. Und mit das Erste, was ich tat, war von Toronto nach Memphis zu fahren. Ein Traum wurde für mich wahr! Das war das erste Mal, als ich da war. Das letzte Mal war ich dort in 2012. Ich habe viele Touren gemacht und es waren nicht viele Leute da, ich hatte sein Zuhause für mich allein, das war sehr schön. Ich liebe Graceland und es gibt mir ein besonderes Gefühl, wenn ich dort bin. Es bringt Dich in Deine Kindheit zurück und ist einfach etwas ganz besonders.
Nastassja Juel Stork: Meinst Du, hast Du Gemeinsamkeiten mit Elvis?
Grahame Patrick: Ich habe viele Gemeinsamkeiten mit Elvis, ich bin ein Mensch, man macht menschliche Erfahrungen. Ich bin getrennt lebend, ich habe ein Kind, Elvis war getrennt lebend, hatte ein Kind. So kann ich verstehen, was für ein Schmerz dies mit sich bringt. Ich bin im gleichen Business, dem Musikbusiness, ich kenne auch diese ups and downs, dann hast Du viele verschiedene Leute um Dich herum, dann plötzlich niemanden mehr, dann bist Du plötzlich ganz alleine. Es sind viele Gemeinsamkeiten, sowohl private als auch welche, die der Beruf mit sich bringt. Aber es gibt auch vieles, was wir nicht gemeinsam haben, ich bin in Irland geboren und aufgewachsen, Elvis ist im Süden von Amerika geboren und aufgewachsen, es sind ganz andere Hintergründe. Aber das meiste sind menschliche Erfahrungen, persönliche Aspekte.

Nastassja Juel Stork:In what way are the german and the american audience different?
Grahame Patrick: In Germany the audience is a little bit more reserved, where as in America they shout and scream a lot more and sometimes in inappropriate places (laugh – editor’s note) they get involved more with the show where the german audience sit back and watch the show. And I like both forms of these, I like all audiences. So it’s just an interesting thing. But even in Germany at the end of our show our audience is going crazy. So I love that – I love the fact that the german audience can watch the show and then still get involved in the end so it’s a beautiful thing.
Nastassja Juel Stork:Do you have a favorite song of Elvis?
Grahame Patrick: I have many, many, many, many favorite songs of Elvis. One of my favorites is “I am leaving” , l but I can go on and on about that favorite songs.
Nastassja Juel Stork:Do you have a personal highlight in the Show?
Grahame Patrick: The whole show for me is a highlight I enjoy every aspect. But there is something: Singing with the Stamps Quartet, that is very special. Singing with Ed Enoch is probably my highlight.
Nastassja Juel Stork:Do you still have stage-fright after so many shows in the last 20 years and do you have rituals before the Show?
Grahame Patrick: I am always a little bit nervous before every show. Every audience is different, there are different people out there, you want and you hope that you like what you do, so you are always nervous of that. And when you working so hard you want to make sure that you have your voice and you are physically able. Like anything goes wrong you got to keep your head about you, concentrate, work hard and have fun overcome those little fears that you have.
We are like to get together as a group and put our hands and fists in the middle together, we call it “The power rangers”. It’s like solidarity as a team we like to give each other a bit of energy and wish each other well before we perform
Nastassja Juel Stork:How is it to play every evening in another town? Do you have time to go sightseeing?
Grahame Patrick: Every day is different, so I like going from town to town, it’s something exciting about that, going to different places, playing in different venues, that’s always exciting to see what’s gonna happen – that’s exciting for me. I don’t always have time to sightseeing. We usually get into a town, usually straight get to the hotel or the theatre and we start working right away and getting preparing for the show – and after the show we go back to the hotel. When we have a day off, the following day off or we are in town early I can get hanging out for a bit and sightseeing.
Nastassja Juel Stork: The audience in your show belongs mostly to older generation – do you wish that more younger people would visit your show and that the coming generations will not forget Elvis?
Grahame Patrick: Of course I would love younger people to find Elvis. To find I him I guess the way I found him. I stumbled across him at the radio when I was very, very young and I knew there was something I was interested in that sound or that voice. A lot of families bring their children and I can see it in their eyes that they are enjoy it and that there are a little bit fascinated by them. It’s a lovely thing for younger people to find Elvis, too. We shall not forget that Elvis would be 81 years old and there is an older generation. But he still gets all kinds of ages, there are all kinds of poeple to see our show.

Nastassja Juel Stork:Elvis featured in 31 films – have you seen all films and do you have a favorite?
Grahame Patrick: Yes, I have seen every movie of course. They are a lot of fun movies, I think King Creole is my favorite. The soundtrack is incredible and I think is some of his best acting, the skript was good – it’s a good movie.
Nastassja Juel Stork:Which music are you listening in your spare time?
Grahame Patrick: That’s everything! Right now I can’t stop listening to Roy Orbinson, I love Bobby Darin (Mack the knife), Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, I love soul-music, Solomon Burke, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke I listen all kind of things, I love the Bee Gees, The Beatles of course, Coldoplay, they are some more modern, U2,The Crooners, Neil Diamond…
Nastassja Juel Stork:Have you ever visited Graceland up to now? If not, are you interested in?
Grahame Patrick: I have visited Graceland. It was one of the first things I moved to Canada when I was sixteen. And one of the first things was to drive from Toronto to Memphis and it was a dream come true! That was the first time I was there. The last time I was there was in 2012 and I took a couple of tours and there wasn’t many people there so I had the home to myself, which was lovely. So I love Graceland – I get a very special feeling when I am there – it brings you back to being a child. It is very Special
Nastassja Juel Stork:Do you see to have commonalities with Elvis?
Grahame Patrick: I have a lot of commonalities with Elvis, just being human, having a human experience. I am separated and I have one child, Elvis was separated and had one child. So I can understand a lot of the pain that goes along with that. I am in the same business with ups and downs, highs and lows, and you have all kinds of people around you then you have nobody around you, so you are lonely for one minute and you can be lonely for a long time. A lot of things are personal I have in common with him and there a lot of things they are just in the business. But there are a lot of things we don’t have in common with him, I am born and raised in Ireland, Elvis was born and raised in America in the south, so completely different backgrounds. But so mostly it’s the human experience a lot of things we did similar but there are more personal issues that I am rather not going into.
